Kureto wasted no time in letting me test out my new vampire abilities as we headed to Shinjuku to follow Guren’s Moon Demon Company. Every vampire nest we crossed he ordered me to go in alone with no one to help me, the only kindness he gave me during my training was that he told me I didn’t have to worry about any collateral damage like the children still being held prisoners.

“Are you sure this all right Kureto, shouldn’t we at least save the kids first? If we go in together we could just capture the bloodsuckers and I can fight them afterwards.” I said as I stood in front of the abandoned highway tunnel that had now become a lair for a large number of vampires. I gripped my sword to stop my hand from shaking as my doubts started to cloud my mind.

“Oh don’t tell me you’re going soft and want to start acting human just because you grew some fangs?” Kureto looked at me with a sinister smile reminding me that I had always been a monster to kill on his command long before I became a half breed. “Don’t worry (F/n) in case the worst should happen and a child or two does get killed during your fight I’ll make sure the reports say that they were killed by a vampire.” He walked over to me and tapped my shoulder to reassure me of what I had to do.

His words echoed in my ear as I wondered if he meant that he would blame the vampires I’d be fighting or if he saw me as vampire just like the others. I closed my eyes and tried to remember what a good friend Kureto had been to me ever since the world ended. He took me in, protected me and taught me how to fight. I didn’t follow him because he was my commanding officer but because he was my savior, the life I had now was all because of him. But ever since I met Mitsuba I saw that there was strength in protecting someone as well as senseless carnage.

“Thanks, the last thing I need is someone bothering me because some kid got in my way and ended up dead.” I tried to sound like my former self and be the one Kureto needed for his mission and headed inside the dark tunnel.

I had no trouble seeing in the dark thanks to my new powers and I could also hear far into the tunnel, though all I heard was children crying I started to think why I was so worried about their safety. Suddenly I heard on of them scream and the laughter of a vampire, I unsheathed Morunaga and let his power possess me. With even more power flowing through me I practically flew to where the children where and cut off the vampires arm so fast I sent a shockwave with my slash I was even able to kill him before he noticed what had happened.

“Ah hahaha!” my laugh crackled through the tunnel as if they were coming from someone who had gone insane. “Oh man, I was so nervous about these new powers I forgot how much I love tearing you blood suckers apart!” I brushed my (h/c) hair back since it had flown over my face from the sudden dash I made as I straitened myself up. “Kids as much I’m sure you’d enjoy the show that’s about to happen, I think you should all go outside where it’s safe.” I glared down at the children behind me and they along with the others around the tunnels started running out the way I came in.

Some of the vampires tried to stop them from leaving but I moved so fast it was as if time was standing still as I cut them down to give the kids time to escape. I wanted to see just how much my new powers were capable of and so gave the remaining vampires a chance to fight back not that it mattered though. Surrounded by ten other vampires I killed most of them with a single slash from my sword as I stepped around their attacks like it was all a game. My speed was never lacking thanks to Morunaga’s demon powers but when I experimented with my body’s new strength I was able to crush a vampire’s head with my bare hands. Of course I broke out laughing as soon as I saw how strong I was while the remaining three vampires tried to run away. I killed one as I ran passed him and slashed him with my sword then had to come to a stop when I saw the other two had managed two catch up to the kids and were each using one as a shield to ward me off. Before I would have just ran my blade through the children and killed the vampires behind them but now the thought of how Mitsuba might look at me if she found out made me loosen my grip on my sword nearly letting it slip out of my hands.

“Heh, it’s funny before I would have killed all four of you and walked away with smile on my face.” I held up Morunaga and smiled to taunt the bloodsuckers in front of me. “Instead I’m going to make sure those kids don’t even see me turn you both into ash.” I disappeared in a blur leaving the vampires even more worried as they kept threatening to kill their hostages.

In the middle of one of their hysterical shouts I cut both of their heads off standing as far from them as could only using the very end of my blade to slice through their necks. As they turned to ash the kids fell with a surprised look on their faces at the sudden drop. Though this new protective feeling I felt towards them made me rush to catch them before they hit the ground and placed them gently down as I held their hands and told them they were safe. I kept thinking about my behavior the entire time I escorted them outside, I felt like I should be trying everything to stay the monster Kureto wanted but I didn’t feel like had done anything wrong.

“Now this is a sight my (F/n) holding hands with the kiddies, how adorable.” Kureto welcomed me back with the smug smile I had come to admire and follow.

“They were scared alright, I just didn’t want them crying in my ear the whole time.” I said as I led the two who were holding my hands to their friends who had gathered at the rear of the Kureto’s camp.

We soon left for Shinjuku to meet with the rest of the army. Like always I was in the same car as Kureto. Amazingly we never had an awkward silence when we rode together he’d usually complement me on what a good job I had done and how he loved the show I’d put on as I cut through countless enemies, though this time was different.

“You know you don’t need to keep acting around me, right?” his words broke me away from watching the wasteland pass us by.

“Wha-what do you mean?” I stammered and scratched my cheek. I was never a good liar.

“Hmm, I’ve known you your whole life and that whole time you’ve been a ruthless killer. Now all of a sudden you’re helping kids out of the scary dark tunnel. It’s not that hard to spot the difference, so what happened?” his smug attitude was usually fun to watch but being on the receiving end was just annoying.

I held back from cursing him off and muffled a growl then with a sigh I told him why I was acting so different.

“I met a girl alright and for some reason I don’t feel right about killing my own comrades.”

“Hahaha! Are you serious, that’s why you’ve been so nice to everyone all of a sudden? That’s priceless!” Seeing Kureto’s usual composed expression breakout into a laughing fit made me feel even more annoyed.

After he had finally calmed down he made me answer any questions he had about Mitsuba and I was in no mood to jump out of the car and run to Shinjuku so I answered them.

I was finally saved from the relentless questioning when we arrived at the Shinjuku walls. We had gotten there in the middle of the vampire invasion, the streets and buildings were on fire and the bodies of our soldiers were scattered around. As soon as Kureto and I stepped out of the car we saw everyone rushing to an attack site, they said the invasion was over and they were now going to rescue Guren and his team who were on the front lines. My heart sank for a second as I imagined Mitsuba injured her body covered in blood and crawling on the floor looking for help. This concern made me start to shake and without even asking for permission I dashed off to where the soldiers had pointed out. By the time I got there an entire recovery camp had been set up to treat the injured. I asked around for where Guren’s squad was until someone finally showed me a tent. A chill ran through my body as the only person inside was a boy around my age with short black hair, I instantly thought the worse and believed I had lost Mitsuba forever. Before whenever I had received bad news I would kill anyone who was around but this time I just fell to my knees from how weak I felt.

“Yuu!” I heard voices come from behind me and saw the rest of Shinoa’s team, I had met them for just a few minutes before they had left for Shinjuku.

“(F/n)?” Mitsuba called me from beside her friends. “What are you doing here?”

My face had turned red from being caught off guard.

“I um… was just making sure not too many people were hurt.” I was reminded how bad a liar I was.

She caught me up to what had happened with her friend as the doctors started taking him into one of the buildings. To help her calm down I asked her to walk around with me a little, she was clearly worried about her friend but decided to go with me since there was nothing more she could do for him other than wait for him to wake up.

“This place looks like hell, are you alright?” I asked her as we walked around the streets where the main battle had happened.

“I was really scared but I’m fine now, Yuu saved us somehow. I was being attacked so I didn’t see what happened very well.” She said walking pressed against me as if she’d fall over if without me there, her head resting on the side of my shoulder and I saw that I wasn’t that much taller than her as I thought.

The back of her hand kept tapping mine so I held her hand in mine then she opened her fingers and tangled them together to hold my hand even tighter.

“I-I’m glad you’re safe now that the fight is over. I was afraid something had happened.” I told her.

“I told you not to underestimate me didn’t I.” as she said that she looked like she had woken up from her saddened state and the looked over to me and smiled.

Seeing that she was finally calming down and starting to smile I decided to be a little selfish and kept talking to her as we walked around instead of letting her go back to her injured friend. We weren’t talking much but I was glad to see her happy as we got to a broken bridge and enjoyed the sight of the sun set behind the walls. I was glad to see her at peace so soon after a hard fight. As it got darker she yawned into her hand and blinked a few times to focus her eyes.

“Getting tired?” I asked in a strange playful voice.

“Mm.” she nodded and looked at me with a tired smile. “We should head back, I want to make sure Yuu is okay before I go to bed.” She said taking my hand giving it a tug to follow her back.

“Um about going to bed?” she looked back at me as I scratched the back of my head nervously. “After you see your friend do you want to come to mine?” Kureto told me what two people do when they liked each other but he didn’t tell me how to ask someone when I wanted them to invite them.

“Huh?” her face suddenly turned red. “Do-don’t you think you’re being too direct there?!” she started screaming.

“I know it sounds weird but I’ve never asked a girl to my room before so I don’t know how I should do it… the asking I mean. Kureto gave me a book once about what to do when I get in bed with someone so I have some idea of what to do from there.” I tried to help her calm down but felt like I was doing it wrong for some reason.

“Alright I get it.” She said with a tired voice. She kept looking back and forth before looking to me again. “Let me just go see how Yuu is doing and say good bye to the others then I’ll meet you in your room.” I was so happy to hear say yes to me that I gave her a big smile. “Don’t look so happy idiot!” she roared as she pulled my hand along with her as she went back to the building.

As a part of Kureto’s personal guard I had my own room which was several times larger than most of the rooms, well decorated and with a large soft bed. I started taking off my uniform and placed my sword on the wall next to the bed. I passed my hand over the sheath as a way of saying good night to my demon inside. As I went back to changing out of my clothes I heard a knock on my door, as I opened it I saw Mitsuba and invited her in.

“Look I’ve never done this before so just don’t do anything stupid okay?” although she sounded upset I could hear her heart beating faster and faster.

“Hehe, you’re so cute.” I walked over and hugged her from behind just to enjoy the fact that she was there with me.

Although she looked flustered she reached up and held my arms to return my feelings. I turned her around and started kissing her. She started moving towards the bed and then held me down with one hand and looked down at me.

“You’re stronger than I thought.” I joked.

She then laid down on top of me and we went back to kissing until she backed away and tears started flowing from her eyes.

“Mitsuba what’s wrong?” I asked holding her head up in my hands.

“I-I love you (F/n).” she said in a sad tone of voice.

“That’s no reason to cry, I love you too.” I tried to smile but seeing her like this made it difficult.

“Promise me you’ll be careful, I don’t want to lose anyone else ever again.” She cried out in my hands.

“I’m not going anywhere.” I gave her a kiss and laid her on the bed, threw both our clothes off to the ground and got us under the sheets. Just as I was about to kiss her I saw vampire bite marks. “What’s this?” I growled as passed my thumb over them.

“I got attacked by one of the vampires and he bit me, the same thing happened to the others before Yuu saved us.” She took my hand over her shoulder and held it tight.

“Sorry but I can’t leave another vampires marks on something that belongs to me.” I growled as lowered down to her neck.

I hissed when I opened my mouth and bared my fangs as I got closer to her.

“Wait! (F/n)! No!” she cried.

Then just as I was about to bite her I gave her a kiss instead.

“Did you really think I was going to hurt you? Heh, you really are cute.” I laughed looking up at her from her chest.

“(F/n), you’re such an idiot!” she shouted.

“Sorry, sorry. I’ll stop teasing you.” I said happily seeing that she wasn’t to mad at me.

“Just a little is fine.” She said looking a bit shy.

“Haha, got it.” I gave her another kiss from how happy I was and pulled the covers over us completely as we started moving around and let a few strange noises escape during the night.
